This PDF, Characterization of the U.S. Industrial/Commercial Boiler Population, is a 2005 report prepared for Oak Ridge National Laboratory that analyzes the size, makeup, energy use, fuel types, applications, geographic distribution, and age of boilers operating in U.S. industrial and commercial facilities. The study estimated roughly 163,000 boilers nationwide, with industrial boilers generally being much larger and more energy-intensive than commercial units.
